A 61-year-old Little Falls man died in a fire at an apartment complex early Tuesday in Little Falls.
The name of the victim was withheld pending notification of relatives, the Little Falls Fire Department reported. But Emblom-Brenny Funeral Home in Little Falls reported it was handling funeral arrangements for John "Jack" Herbaugh, who died in the fire at Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls.
Editor's note:
The Dispatch did not seek out the victim's name and does not identify victims of fatal accidents unless the name is released from an official source, such as law enforcement, or released by the family.
In this case, the family was notified of the death and asked Emblom-Brenny Funeral Home to submit an obituary to the newspaper.
The Little Falls Fire Department reported two others at the apartment complex were treated for minor smoke inhalation at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls.
A passerby reported smoke coming from the Pine Grove Manor apartment complex, 901 First Ave. S.W. in Little Falls, about 6:19 a.m., Fire Chief Mike Nieman said.
Nieman said the fire was contained to the victim's apartment, but the entire wing had smoke and water damage.
"It was bad," Nieman said of the fire and smoke damage. "The whole wing had to be evacuated." The 18 residents who lived in the wing will be housed elsewhere for the time being, Nieman said.
Deputy State Fire Marshal Mark Germain, who investigated the fire-damaged apartment complex later Tuesday, said the cause of the fire wasn't immediately known.
The Little Falls Fire Department was at the scene of the fire for about three hours and was assisted by the Randall Fire Department.
