Unlucky might not be the word for this car thief.
A 24-year-old Brainerd man was arrested on probable cause auto theft today after being stopped for running a stop sign in Brainerd.
Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc said the suspect stole a cargo van with the keys left in it about 8:30 a.m. from in front of the Medicine Shoppe at 108 South Sixth street.
Within two blocks -- and before the van was reported stolen -- Brainerd Officer Corky McQuiston stopped the suspect for running a stop sign.
"It isn't too often that you stop a stolen vehicle before it's reported," Bolduc said.
While McQuiston was questioning the suspect the owner of the van called the Law Enforcement Center and reported it stolen, Bolduc said.
When the suspect realized McQuiston knew the van to be stolen he fled on foot and was caught a short time later.
The suspect is being held in Crow Wing County Jail pending formal charges.
