Ruth Nelson, who currently serves as chair of the Brainerd School Board, filed Tuesday for re-election to one of the three open four-year terms on the board.
There also is a special two-year term up for election. Filings opened Tuesday.
Nelson, 51, of East Gull Lake, said she is running again because she would like to continue to be part of the board's ongoing mission of providing a quality education to all students in the district.
"As a school board member, I promise this community I will always make each and every decision with much thought," said Nelson. "I will always make decisions based on what is best for our students. I have made it a priority to visit each school in the district at least once each year and I will continue these visits. I will continue to listen to both school district and community input on issues that come before the board."
Nelson joined the board in 2006. She is chair of the school board curriculum committee and is a district advisory committee school board representative, a past PTA president, a Math Master coach for fifth- and sixth-grade, a Kinship Partner mentor and past council president at Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
The chair of the Brainerd School Board, Ruth Nelson filed Tuesday for re-election to one of the three open four-year terms on the board.
She is employed as a public relations consultant with Academic Business Advisors. She and her husband, Chuck, who works at In-Fisherman, have two sons, Sam, 17, a senior at Brainerd High School, and Tim, 15, a freshman at BHS South Campus. They also have a 16-year-old German foreign exchange student staying with them this year and attending BHS.
Nelson said when her husband was offered a new career opportunity in Brainerd when their eldest son was 5 months old, the quality of the school district played a large role in their decision to move here.
"My goal as a school board member is to maintain this quality," Nelson explained. "I believe strong results come from hiring and retaining good teachers, developing effective curriculum and effectively managing the district budget to ensure adequate financial resources. It has been an interesting and challenging four years on the board. The board has had many challenges, including cutting $5.5 million from the budget and hiring a new superintendent. And the board has successfully met those challenges."
Nelson said Superintendent Steve Razidlo has done an excellent job in his first year, which would have been a challenging year for even an experienced superintendent.
Filings close Sept. 8.
