Huether third, Warriors tie for fifth, in opener

NISSWA -- Brainerd's Kayla Huether finished third and the Brainerd Warrior girls' tennis team opened its season Thursday with a fifth-place finish in the Camp Lake Hubert Invitational in Nisswa.

Huether won three of her five No. 1 singles matches. She defeated Blue Earth's Jenae Willette 8-1, Osseo's Stephanie Woolley 8-5 and Blaine's Jenny Peterson 8-5. Her losses were to Eastview's Meghan Williams 8-1 and Bemidji's Dani Evans 8-4.

None of the Warriors' other individuals or doubles teams won more than one match apiece.

"The Camp Lake Hubert Invitational is a unique experience," Warriors coach Marnie Whalen said. "Hosting five teams overnight at Camp Lake Hubert is a great opener for us.

"Bemidji has traditionally dominated this event. We invited Eastview this year. In their first time in this tournament they had a great showing, with their 31 points beating Bemidji's 25 for the title."

Eastview won all four singles titles and the No. 3 doubles championship.
