Season champions crowned at NCS

Northern National Bank's Season Championship Night at North Central Speedway lent itself to commanding performances by all feature winners Saturday night.

With a comfortable point lead, John Treichler just needed to finish 18th or better to secure the track championship in the Wissota Street Stocks. Not only did Treichler take home the championship, he also landed his No. 94 machine in victory lane.

In the opening laps, Mark Johnson slid around Donny Thompson to claim the second spot. After the field was slowed due to debris on the track, Thompson overtook the second spot momentarily until Johnson fought back to reclaim the position.

Thompson and Dan Beens battled for the third spot throughout the last half of the event but it was Treichler taking the checkers with Johnson and Thompson following him.

With the Wissota Midwest Modified track championship locked up by qualifying for the main event, the No. 87 of George Mattson could have breathed a sigh of relief. Instead, Mattson ran unchallenged from green to checkers to collect another victory this season.

The real battles though developed from second to fifth. Mark Anderson moved to the low line to pass John Thompson on the inside for second. Dick Peterson chose the high side and slid around Monte Hall for fourth. Hall had retaken fourth until the caution flag waved and Peterson was put back in front of Hall.

Hall spun coming out of turn 4 with a flat tire, ending his strong run for the night. In the closing laps, Thompson passed Anderson for second until a Thompson bobble in turn four allowed Anderson to retake second. Conrad Olson slipped by on the final lap to finish third.

The top five point positions were all up for grabs as the Wissota Super Stocks took center stage. Ten points separated first through third while there was only a two-point margin between fourth and fifth.

As the green flag waved, Tim Johnson took the lead with Erick Thiesse working his way around Ed Jensen for second. Jensen reclaimed the No. 2 spot after an early spinout. By the time the checkered flag flew, the top three finishers at the line were Johnson, Ed Jensen and Brad Jensen.

Thiesse was crowned the Wissota Super Stock track champion by a four-point margin in only his second season in that division. Thiesse did not record a single victory in 2002 but consistency was the name of his game as he claimed eight top five and four top 10 finishes on his road to the championship.

At the start of the NCS Pure Stock feature, Mike Japp had a one-point lead in the standings over fellow front-row starter Cory Loidolt. Suddenly, the point competition was all but over as Japp dropped back in the field due to transmission failure.

With Loidolt leading and Louie Wermter in second, Eric Przybilla worked his way around Charlie Peterson for third and set out in pursuit of Wermter.

As the laps wound down, Przybilla and Wermter ran wheel-to-wheel with Wermter edging him out for second. Loidolt was the winner of the night and claimed the 2002 NCS Pure Stock track championship.
