STAPLES -- Opal Carpenter, 80, Staples, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, at the Greater Staples Hospital.
Opal was born Aug. 5, 1920, in Barnesville to James and Hazel (Kemp) Monk. On Oct. 5, 1936, she was married to William Carpenter in Sisseton, S.D. They lived in the Mahnomen area before moving to Rochester, where they owned and operated a top soil and blacktop business for many years. Opal worked as a decorator at Elsolf's Bakery for several years. In 1982 they moved to Becker Township in Cass County. She was a member of Casino Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include a son, Stacy, Motley; three daughters, Rita VonFeldt, Castle Rock, Colo., Ruby Ferguson, Morrison, Colo., and Emily Kohler, Motley; two sisters, Jeannie Richardson, Esterville, Iowa, and Charlene Nelson, Redding, Calif.; two brothers, Harold Monk, Foxhome, and Paul Monk, Fort Ripley; 14 grand children and 16 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husband, a son, Leslie, and a grandson died earlier.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Casino Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Mike Broberg officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.
Friends may visit 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples.
