Megan Malz, daughter of Scott and Nona Malz, Pine River, was awarded a $11,000 President's Scholarship and a $1,000 Art Scholarship by the College of Saint Benedict for the 2008-09 academic year. Both scholarships are renewable for four years.
The Jacob Pfingsten Memorial Flight Training Scholarship was presented to Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Luke Zahm, 16, St. Cloud Composite Squadron-Civil Air Patrol, at the recent Minnesota Wing Flight Academy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The scholarship was created by the parents of Jacob Pfingsten, Tom and Beth, Brainerd, both Civil Air Patrol members, and LaDonna and Randy Blackorbay, Maple Grove. It was created to encourage all Civil Air Patrol cadets graduating from the Minnesota Wing Flight Academy to continue their flight training and obtain their FAA private pilot certificate. The scholarship provides up to 30 hours of flight training with one year for the cadet to use the funds and obtain their certificate. Jacob Pfingsten was a longtime member of the Crow Wing Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol, both as a cadet and as a senior member. He obtained his FAA private pilot certificate through the CAP program. He died in February 2005 of natural causes while serving with the U.S. Army in Germany.
Nicole Heino, daughter of Marty and Sandy Heino, Pequot Lakes, is one of 43 University of Minnesota-Duluth students that participated in the Study in England Program. She is a freshman at UMD, majoring in international studies. Students spend the year at the University of Birmingham Selly Oak Campus, 110 miles northwest of London.
Emily Thesing, Spencer Hegstad, Hannah Rhoda and Alannah Dosh were sponsored by the Brainerd Noon Foundation Rotary Club and Chelsey Posterick and Michael Ruen, sponsored by the Brainerd Lakes Sunrise Rotary Club, recently spent a week attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Camp, at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Camp RYLA's mission is to provide outstanding high school students with a variety of educational and recreational activities that provide opportunities for leadership and team building.
