Cardinals win tennis tourney

CROOKSTON -- Jacque Peterson and Emma Pipek won individual titles and the Staples-Motley Cardinals captured the team championship in the Crookston tennis tournament Saturday.

Peterson won at No. 1 singles and Pipek at No. 2. Peterson and Pipek raised their season records to 5-1. Kate Eden was third at No. 3 singles, losing for the first time in six matches.

Other Cardinal runners-up were Sheila Noska at No. 4 singles, and the doubles teams of Amanda DiGiovanni-Amy Freeman and Jenny Mueller-Kristi Halverson.

"We had to make several changes Saturday morning with Kim Mosack (injury) and Machele Michels (illness) not being able to play," Cardinals coach Sarah Penfield said. "The girls showed strong resolve in being able to deal with the different lineup and take care of business."

C-I wins at Aitkin

AITKIN -- The Crosby-Ironton Rangers tennis team won the Aitkin Quarterbacks Invitational Friday.

Individually, Pierz's Emily Stumpf won the No. 1 singles division. C-I dominated the doubles portion with Betsy Wehseler and Farrah Steinke winning the No. 2 double and Angie Gaviglio and Amelia Erickson winning at No. 3 doubles.
