The Brainerd Fire Department Friday responded to what turned out to be a false alarm at Bethany Good Samaritan, 804 Wright Street. The alarm was reported at 8:27 p.m. A lightning strike causing a power surge set off the alarm, the fire department reported.

MOTLEY -- A 23-year-old Brainerd man died Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 10 between Staples and Motley.
AITKIN -- Carol Dudley, age 71, of Aitkin, died on Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. She was born Dec. 22, 1931, in Minneapolis to Joseph and Harriet (Knouse) Chelmo. She attended Jordan Schools in Minneapolis and worked for more than 30 years for Honeywell. She married Jerome Dudley on Jan. 21, 1950, in Minneapolis.
AITKIN -- Donald Rimer, age 70, of Aitkin, died on Friday, Aug. 22, 2003. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Malmo. Visitation will be one hour before the services. Arrangements with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.

LaVerne W. Schuety, age 78, resident of Brainerd, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. LaVerne was born April 7, 1925, in Brainerd, Minn., to the late Charles and Susan (White) Schuety. He grew up in Brainerd. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-1946. He returned to Brainerd and worked construction and for the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1985.
