Water safety instructor aide class offered

The Brainerd YMCA will hold a Red Cross water safety instructor aide class beginning Sept. 9.

This course provides training for people ages 12 or older who wish to assist water safety instructors in teaching swimming lessons. Participants must be able to demonstrate all the skills listed as requirements in the YMCA Fish or American Red Cross Level IV swimming classes.

Classes will meet from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 9 through Oct. 7.

Cost is $10, which doesn't include the optional instructor's manual that costs $24. Register soon. Class sizes are limited to 10 students. Registration deadline is Sept. 2. Classes must be paid for at the time of registration.

CLC Cultural Thursday set Sept. 7

Central Lakes College Cultural Thursday on Sept. 7 will feature Honduras, Belize and Guatemala with Mona Gorham, Brainerd, showing slides and speaking of her spring 2000 visit as part of Elderhostel.

The free event will run from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Room E339 on the Brainerd campus. Bring a bag lunch.

Area school districts receive grants

The Central Minnesota School to Work Regional Partnership recently awarded $46,000 in grants to the Aitkin, Brainerd, Crosby-Ironton, Little Falls, Pequot Lakes, Pierz, Staples-Motley, Browerville, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle, Bertha-Hewitt and Swanville school districts.

Funds will be used to implement an array of school-to-work projects in each community. Projects include student internships, job-shadowing, career awareness activities, industry field trips, student chambers of commerce and entrepreneurial projects.

Pillager teachers

complete internships

Two Pillager School District teachers recently completed a summer 2000 Educator in the Workplace Internship.

Ann Hutchinson, business education, had an internship in the human resources department at Grand Casino Mille Lacs. Karl Kaufmann, forestry and biotechnology, had an internship with the DNR forestry division.

The Educator in the Workplace Internship is part of the Central Minnesota School to Work Partnership. Its goal is to bring members of the business sector and education together through communications and hands-on activities.

Brainerd finance committee to meet

The Brainerd Personnel and Finance Committee will meet 5 p.m. Aug. 31 at Brainerd City Hall to discuss the preliminary 2001 budget and levy.
