20 years ago (1989)

Marlin Wicklund, 56, a retired State Patrol officer, was remanded to jail today after asking that no bail be set at this time. He surrendered to police after a 19-hour armed standoff at the Stoneybrook South Trailer Park.

30 years ago (1979)

(Photos) Phil Maneske, Brainerd, bagged a 10-0 walleye on Whitefish Lake, using a Lindy Floater in 28 feet of water. Ron Lindner, Brainerd, hooked a pair of trophy-sized northerns on Gull Lake, the largest weighing in at 14-6 pounds.

40 years ago (1969)

Around 1,000 people attended an open house at the Brainerd State Hospital at which former Vice President and Mrs. Hubert Humphrey were the guest speakers. Brainerd Mayor Clyde Gorham presented Mrs. Humphrey with a gold key to the city.

60 years ago (1949)

Bye's Clothing last night took 10 innings to do it but ended up on the long end of a 10-8 Brainerd Softball B League playoff win. Sparked by the 4-for-6 hitting of Joe Melby they came from behind to knock off King's Sporting Goods.

80 years ago (1929)

Claiming that the five-cent fare to Third Avenue and A Street is yielding insufficient revenue, the operator of the Northeast Brainerd Bus Line asked the Railroad Commission to establish a flat rate of 10 cents on the route from downtown.

100 years ago (1909)

An old barn belonging to the Walker estate, which was moved a few years ago onto ground behind the Nugget Saloon, was destroyed by fire last night. The fire may have been started by a tramp or drunk and it threatened nearby buildings for a time.
