Fishing

Minnesota Fishing Report

By Outdoor News

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Good walleye fishing is reported off the 15- to 22-foot weedlines of Gull Lake, Whitefish Lake, and Pelican Lake. Jigs or live-bait rigs tipped with redtails or rainbow minnows have worked best. Northern pike and bass action is going strong on the weedlines of most lakes, but panfish reports have been limited.

BEMIDJI AREA

Topwater baits are triggering muskies off Cameron Point on Lake Bemidji. Redtails and live-bait rigs are turning walleyes on Bemidji in 20 to 25 feet. Minnows also have been the ticket for walleyes on Lake Plantagenet in 12 to 15 feet. The northwest corner of the sunken island on Grace Lake is holding bluegills and crappies in 15 feet. Bluegill action also is strong on the weedlines of Marquette Lake.

CASS LAKE

A few walleyes have been taken with leeches in 20 to 25 feet off Deadman?s Bar, North Rock, and the Hump. If the wind is blowing, perch and walleyes become active in eight feet on Cedar Bar. Muskies continue to hit bucktails and topwater baits after dark on the weeds. Dick?s Bay is producing a few sunfish and Rapalas are the way to go on the weedlines for pike.

CROSBY AREA

Walleyes are being caught on the weedlines of Serpent Lake and Rabbit Lake, as well as the deeper pools on the Mississippi River. Bass are being taken on topwater baits along the lily pads of most lakes and pike seem to prefer sucker minnows on the weedlines of area lakes. For panfish, give Little Rabbit Lake or the Mississippi a try. The area?s biggest sunfish are coming from the river. Cedar Lake continues to give up muskies well after dark each day.

HACKENSACK AREA

Minnows or plastics are producing walleyes in 16 to 20 feet during the evening hours at Woman Lake. Trolling crankbaits in less than 10 feet at Ten Mile Lake also has triggered walleyes during low-light periods. Bass action remains strong on most fisheries, while Pleasant Lake and Birch Lake are the area?s best panfish options.

LAKE MILLE LACS

EAST - Walleyes are being taken with crankbaits or slip bobbers and leeches off the mud and gravel in 27 feet or deeper. Muskies are being spotted "everywhere" with the north-end sand, Isle Bay, and Hennepin Island area producing the most strikes. The smallmouth bass bite has been hot with crankbaits or tube jigs on the 10- to 14-foot rocks.

WEST - The evening hours remain best for walleyes on the mud flats. Work the edges and tops with crankbaits or slip bobbers and leeches. Some fish have been taken at night with crankbaits in shallower water as well. The weedlines of St. Alban's Bay continue to produce pike with crankbaits or spinners and minnows working best. The rock points and rock reefs continue to produce smallmouth and perch action remains slow.

LEECH LAKE

Spinners and crawlers are producing walleyes at the Hardwoods in nine to 12 feet. There's some evening crankbait action taking place in seven to 12 feet off Sand Point, Cedar Point, and Pine Point. The bulrushes in the Walker Bay Narrows are worth noting for panfish and the rice beds of Minnesota Island and in Boy Bay are holding bass. Muskies are hitting bucktails on the rocks off Pelican Island and Pelican Reef.

McGREGOR AREA

Work the weedlines adjacent to sharp breaks for sunfish and crappies at Big Sandy Lake. Walleye action is limited, but bass are biting well on the weedlines of Round Lake and Lake Minnewawa. Minnewawa is the areas best bet for pike as well.

PARK RAPIDS AREA

Crawlers are producing walleyes during the evening hours in 24 to 28 feet of water at Long Lake and Potato Lake. Hit Fifth and Sixth Crow Wing for bluegills in 12 to 14 feet of water. Some nice bass have been pulled from Lake Belle Taine with plastics and sucker minnows are producing pike in 12 to 14 feet of water at Fish Hook Lake. Big Mantrap Lake continues to give up muskies via bucktails and you will hit some suspended trout at Long Lake and Bad Medicine Lake.

ST. CLOUD/EDEN VALLEY AREA

Consistent sunfish action is reported from six to 12 feet at Rice Lake, Lake Koronis, and the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes. Bass activity remains strong and the Sauk River is a safe bet for channel catfish. Minnows pitched in the weeds of Koronis and Rice have produced walleyes. The weed pockets of Grand Lake and Pearl Lake are holding crappies.
