JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals girls ran the best average time in team history on their way to a runner-up finish at the season-opening Jamestown Invitational cross country running meet Friday.
S-M coach Gene Mattila said the Cardinals' averaged time was 15:38. Mattila said it was the first time the Cardinal girls had broken a 16-minute average as a team.
The Cardinals' Brittany Brenny became the first girl in program history to complete 4,000 meters in less than 15 minutes. Brenny placed seventh at 14:55.
Dickinson, N.D., which won the girls' meet, is ranked fifth in the nation. The Cardinals finished three places ahead of Bowman, N.D., which has won 22 consecutive Class B titles.
In the boys' meet, S-M finished fourth and the Cardinals' Dan Huebsch placed 10th.
