Losing sleep? Don't try counting bass

Posted: Saturday, August 23, 2008

I thought I was done losing sleep over fish. Then it happened again.

In the past, I awoke in the middle of the night, thinking about fish. It was a first since a winter period in which the walleye fishing on Gull was good and I wanted to be out there at all hours.

This most recent sleepless period happened to come during the full-moon phase. We were out looking for a big bass. We were fishing top-water frogs and had some fish on and some blow-ups. That's why I'm up at 4:01 a.m. writing my weekly column when normally I let it run down to the deadline wire.

Do I feel like going out after those big fish right now under the moonlight? It's tempting, but I have two guide trips later this day and I have to get into the shop early to rig for the other fish (the walleye).

I have bass fever right now and it will stick with me until I catch the big kahuna. But for now, it's time to have a cup or two, shower, shave and try to shine.

Oh, if you work on the water in the Brainerd lakes area, you may want to consider attending the Aquatic Invasive Species seminar from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes. We attended the last seminar and it was very informative.
