Ula Vollmer Lagergren, age 90, of Brainerd, died at her home on Saturday, July 26, 2008, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, at 1:30 p.m.
The family requests memorials to Hospice or the Salvation Army in lieu of flowers. The Nelson-Doran Funeral Home Funeral Home of Brainerd, Minn., is handling the arrangements.
Ula Lavonne Vollmer Lagergren was born Feb. 17, 1918, in Ironton, Minn., the daughter of John and Pearl (Tommerdahl) Berg. She graduated from Devils Lake High School. After high school, Ula attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. She then worked for West Publishing Company of Minneapolis.
On Jan. 2, 1942, Ula married Louis Vollmer and lived in Minneapolis until they moved to Brainerd in 1957. Ula was secretary of Crow Wing Cemetery from 1957 to 1967 and then secretary for Minnesota Highway Patrol for 19 years.
On May 17, 1986, Ula married Richard Lagergren, retired from the Highway Patrol and volunteered in the Brainerd Hospital Same-Day Surgery for 14 years.
Ula was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church for 51 years, Isaac Walton League for 50 years and Eastern Star. She loved working in the yard, knitting, crocheting, baking, bowling and playing bridge with friends.
Ula is survived by her husband, Richard Lagergren; two sons, Steve and Jackie, of Brainerd, and his son, Patrick, John and Mary, of Brainerd, and his son, Ryan; two daughters, Pam McCarty, of Houston, and her sons, Todd and Craig, and Dena Bickhardt and husband, Philip, of Morgan, Minn., and their children, Pam and Adam; her stepson, Paul Lagergren, and his wife, Dawn, and children, Angie, Debra, Tony and Paul Jr.; her stepson, Linus Vollmer. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Kip, Freddy and Taiana.
Ula was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, on Dec. 29, 1978; sister, Leona; and brother, John; and stepson, Virgil.
