I was just watching the Brainerd Safety and Public Works Committee meeting and Lucy Nesheim was right - Bob Olson is making excuses to not cast his vote on temporary structures because he doesn't want to look like a bad guy no matter what the state building code says. I guess he's getting ready for another run for council. I hope those residents he appears to be supporting realize that Bob is only using them for votes in the next election and not because he cares about their structures.
OUR OPINION: CANDIDATES
Part of the ordeal of running for president is putting up with foolish questions. It comes with the territory.
Humor in Minnesota has probably changed since Al Franken was a resident 35 years ago. A recent letter writer compared it to "fifth grade humor." A better comparison of his style of humor used at the Democratic bean feeds might be what we saw in the movie "Fargo" a few years ago. It makes Midwesterners look stupid. Maybe the east and west coast financiers for his campaign think that an unsophisticated approach matches-up well with ignorant Minnesota voters.
Open Forum: The military's stealth draft'
I have much respect for soldier's sacrifices, but little for those who foolishly send them into harm's way.
OUR OPINION: VOTING
Our friends at the League of Women Voters of the Brainerd Lakes Area recently reminded us of an anniversary we would have most likely overlooked.
OTHER OPINION: MEDICARE
Karen Ignagni, chief lobbyist for the health insurance industry, had an important point. Testifying before Congress in 1999, Ms. Ignagni argued that private insurance plans offering coverage for seniors ought to operate on a "level playing field" with regular fee-for-service Medicare, under which doctors are reimbursed directly by Medicare. Back then, the private plans were being paid less than what regular Medicare providers were making. Ms. Ignagni decried what she called the "fairness gap" and argued that the private plans "should not receive disproportionately low government payments."
Paying the price
