Umpire hurt in NL game
MIAMI (AP) -- Umpire Mike Everitt left Wednesday night's game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins in the fifth inning with slight dizziness after a deflected pitch struck him in the mask.
The injury occurred after Marlins outfielder Preston Wilson was hit by a pitch thrown by Terry Adams. The ball ricocheted off Wilson into Everitt's face mask.
Everitt was treated by the Marlins' medical staff. He was not hospitalized.
The game was delayed nine minutes. Play resumed with three umpires. Jim Reynolds worked behind the plate, moving from his second base spot.
Toms no longer
AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- David Toms used to be able to enjoy a quiet dinner, practice in peace and go about his business without a bother. All that changed with one of the most courageous decisions in golf, and a par putt that made him the PGA Champion.
Toms arrived at the NEC Invitational -- a World Golf Championship event he wasn't qualified for until Sunday -- and wore out three pens signing autographs.
