Three racers find repeat success

It was a night of repeats as three racers collected their second consecutive feature victories Saturday night at North Central Speedway.

The three included Dave Mass in Wissota Modified, Troy Jordan in Wissota Midwest Modified and Tim Johnson in Wissota Super Stock.

Dave Read and Derek Olson also won their second Wissota Street Stock and Pure Stock features of the season. Olson also collected a clean sweep by winning his heat race. The wins by Mass, Jordan and Johnson were their fifth of the season at NCS.

Mass, who started in third, passed polesitter Jim Chyba on the second lap in his Modified victory. The 20-lap feature was shortened to 15 laps because of five cautions. Danny Vang passed Chyba on the fourth lap to finish second.

The fourth lap also saw Fred Aschenbauer, Tim O'Brien and another racer tangle on the backstretch. When the dust had settled, Aschenbauer rolled his car once and the nose of O'Brien's car sat on top of the wall. No one was injured.

Johnson, who also started third, led from start to finish in the Super Stock feature. Behind him a battle for second ensued between polesitter Butch Butcher and outside polesitter Cory Loidolt.

At the line, Butcher finished second and Loidolt third. Mass and George Mattson rounded out the top five.

Johnson said he made the winning pass on the inside of turn one. "(Loidolt) just left me a big enough hole to get through there," he said.

Outside polesitter Troy Jordan also led the Midwest Modified feature from start to finish. Making the biggest move in the feature was ninth-place starting Scott Lake who finished third.

Read, who started fourth, had to work for his victory. He passed outside polesitter Wayne Wooden on the eighth lap. The 66-year-old Wooden gained the lead on the second lap when race-leader and polesitter Randy Sprague got a flat tire.

Wooden said he slid up the track on the fourth turn, which allowed Read to pass him. "He was just in there and gone," Wooden said. "I didn't slide bad. Read has just an excellent car."

Wooden settled for third after 12th-place starting Mark Johnson passed him high on the same turn on lap 10. Wooden said Johnson was driving in the rough part of the track.

"I felt pretty special to be running with (Read and Johnson)," Wooden said. "I really did. That really made me feel good, being with the boys."

Polesitter Derek Olson led his friend and third-place starting Chris Thomsen from the fourth lap on in the Pure Stock feature, which was shortened three laps because of the five cautions. Olson said he didn't see Thomsen after the first 1 1/2 laps but Thomsen gave him a few warning taps.

"He just stayed behind me until I would make a mistake," Olson said.

The speedway will have its season championships next Saturday night.
