PINE RIVER -- Betty Waldron, Outing, and Bill Green, Hackensack, were selected Cass County's outstanding senior citizens for 2001 Monday at the Red Pine Supper Club, Pine River, during the Cass County Council on Aging luncheon and meeting.
They received plaques from the Council on Aging, a certificate from Gov. Jesse Ventura and recognition from the Region 5 Area Agency on Aging. They will be honored Aug. 30 at the State Fair, and will be guests of the Council on Aging on the bus to the fair that day.
Waldron has lived in Outing since 1989 when she moved from Minneapolis after retiring from a career in nursing. She is active in the Outing community where she volunteers in any capacity in which she is needed. When time permits, she paints and crochets.
Waldron has been involved in the Outing Senior Club for the past 12 years, and served as president from 1991-93. She helps with the bazaars, donates baked goods, sells raffle tickets and is instrumental in other club activities. At the club's monthly meetings, she takes blood pressure readings and answers questions on health matters. She serves on the calling committees, and currently serves as secretary.
She is a member of the Longville Senior Club (the Young at Heart club). She has served as secretary and treasurer of the club, and works her hours at the information booth during the summer.
Waldron is the current president of the Cass County Council on Aging and has served in this capacity since 1998. She has been a delegate to the Council on Aging for the past 12 years, and serves on committees and events. She is an active member of TRIAD and served as vice chairman for a year. She is currently on the committee to plan the state conference co-sponsored by Cass and Itasca County Triads.
She is a member of RSVP and the Heartland Senior Federation and has served as secretary for the federation for four of the six years she has been involved. She spends many hours traveling to meetings for this organization to better the lives of the senior population.
Waldron is an active member of the Narrows Community Church where she has served as secretary for four years at the church's semi-annual meetings. She sings in the Ecumenical Choir for Thanksgiving service.
In the words of one of the letters of support, "If you want to get a job done right, ask a busy person. Betty is a person deserving of this award and will carry it with the dignity it deserves."
Green is a longtime resident of Hackensack, where he has taken an active part in shaping the community over the years. He is a 55-year member of the American Legion; a trustee of Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, serving to shape the future of this organization; served as treasurer of the Izaak Walton League; is a charter member of the Lions Club and served as treasurer and gambling manager. He is a life member of the Osman Shrine Temple and the Osman Shrine Temple clowns, where he has entertained in parades, schools and other events.
He has served as a Heartland Queen judge, and on the Hackensack City Council. He is an active member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He is also active in the Birch Lake Association, and has served as director; the United Church, where he served as auditor; and the Deep Portage Grouse society, planning its annual banquet. He is currently working on the Centennial 2003, and is working on the book and the celebration.
Green was instrumental in starting the city park and playground, tennis courts, skating rink and in improvements to the Community Building and the skating rink. He has received the Lions Melvin Jones Award, and the Deep Portage Appreciation Award. He and his wife, Bette, have donated many hours of service to the community. He is involved in the monthly pancake breakfast to raise funds for the Lions, and both Bill and Bette plant flowers in the park and care for them all summer.
