POTOMAC, Md. (AP) -- Eunice Kennedy Shriver was hospitalized Tuesday after breaking her hip at her suburban Washington home.

Shriver, the 81-year-old sister of the late President Kennedy, underwent surgery Tuesday night at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington.

A spokeswoman for her son, Maryland Delegate Mark Shriver, said she was awake and talking after the accident.

Shriver's husband, Sargent Shriver, was the founding director of the Peace Corps and the Democratic vice presidential candidate in 1972.
