WALKER -- The Cass County Board received a report Tuesday on costs the county has incurred to transport bodies to and from Ramsey County where the county's contract medical examiner conducts autopsies.
Commissioner Robert Kangas requested the report at an earlier meeting, having seen sizeable bills run through the monthly bills statements commissioners receive for review.
The report covered years 2002 and 2003.
Commissioner Jim Dowson, a former sheriff, suggested the county could again look at other medical examiner services possibly closer to Cass County.
When the board made that review last, it was concluded services available in neighboring counties did not meet the same qualifications for performing official autopsies with evidence usable in court cases as the county's current contractor.
The report the board received Tuesday included costs both for transportation and for Dr. Michael McGee to conduct autopsies. The board referred the report to the county budget committee for additional consideration.
