We've been watching the Olympics and find them very exciting. We're wondering what Brainerd High School athlete has the longest record in an individual sport? It would be interesting to know.
Stray gravestones
Anyone finding stray gravestones please contact the Crow Wing County Historical Society. They will be happy to try and find the cemetery where it belongs.
Trucks are in an industrial park
To the person who complained about the semi-trucks and other large vehicles in front of the recycling center, please know that they are traveling through an industrial park. (Hence the name of the road.) If they are that concerned about semi-trucks, maybe they should redirect their route through a more residential area.
Incredibly inefficient
I noticed that the Brainerd School District is requiring all ninth- through 12th-graders to physically drive to school on just a few days this week to pick up their class assignments. This is something that had been mailed out in the past. I believe several thousand students are involved. How incredibly inefficient this is! The decision came in a mailing that could easily have included those assignments or they could post class assignments on the Web as they do with grades, lunch money accounts and other things.
Wrong day?
The Wednesday edition of the Dispatch stated that Reps. John Ward and Al Doty would be volunteering at the landfill on Thursday. So on Thursday morning I drove out to the landfill because I had occasion to talk to these two gentleman. I was informed by the lady at the landfill, "No, they weren't there. They were there on Wednesday." I made a 20-mile round trip and took my time to do so. Thanks a lot, Dispatch. The price of gas is a little overwhelming lately. I didn't need to make that trip.
Misguided perception
The Saturday Dispatch article on BHS participation is giving the community misguided perception, in my opinion. It was more like 14 percent decline in participation and this is at the varsity level. Parents who have invested the time, energy and money in getting their kids through to the varsity level are those most likely to continue doing it. And 14 percent of those walked away. The true test will be the numbers in the junior high programs with the increased fees at that level.
