Veseli shocks Buckman 2-1 at state

COLD SPRING -- Dan Rocheleu pitched a 3-hit complete game to lead the Pierz Bulldogs past Union Hill 3-0 in the opening round of the Class C amateur baseball state tournament Sunday.

Rocheleau struck out two and walked four as Pierz advanced to play Litchfield in the second round 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cold Spring. Litchfield nipped Green Isle 5-4.

Pierz's Joey Tautges was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Bob Pohlkamp was 2-for-4.

In the Pierz fifth, Paul Herman and Tautges singled. Dan Rocheleau drove in Herman with a sacrifice fly and later scored on a groundout. Pierz added one run in the ninth.

Veseli 2, Buckman 1

COLD SPRING -- The Buckman Billygoats, runners-up in last year's Class C state amateur baseball tournament, were stunned by unheralded Veseli 2-1 in the opening round of the 2002 event Sunday.

Veseli scored both of its runs in the second, Veseli's Joe Friedges doubled with two out. Josh Thom followed with a single. No. 9 batter Chad Krenik followed with an RBI single, scoring Friedges. Thom was safe at home on a throwing error.

A classic pitchers' duel ensued, with neither team scoring again until the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Buckman scored when Ben Hoheisel was hit by a pitch and Scott Boser singled. Wade Bauer singled to drive in Hoheisel with two out.

Veseli brought in LeSueur draftee, John Schaffler, to pitch. He struck out Dan DeChaine to end the game.

Boser finished 3-for-4 and Todd Robinson was 2-for-4 for Buckman.

Winning pitcher Rob Brick went 8 2/3 innings, gave up one run and seven hits, walked none and struck out three.

Losing pitcher Adam Carlson gave up one earned run and seven hits, struck out nine and walked one.
