Four of seven Brainerd City Council seats and three of five Baxter City Council members are up for re-election this fall.
City filings and in some cases school district filings open Aug. 29 and close Sept. 12 throughout the state. People interested in filing for office should contact the city clerk or school district clerk.
The general election is Nov. 7.
Brainerd council members who face re-election are at-large members Lucy Nesheim and Gene Goedker, First Ward member Jim Dehen and Third Ward member Gary Scheeler. In Brainerd a $5 filing fee will be charged.
Baxter council members whose terms will expire are Mayor Gary Muehlhausen and council members Barb Wells and Craig MacDonald.
In Baxter the mayor is a member of the city council who may vote on every issue. In Brainerd the mayor votes only in the case of a tie.
All of the above terms are four years.
In the Sept. 12 primary in Crow Wing County, District 1 voters must narrow the three-person field down to two candidates. Filing for the District 1 commissioner post were Jim Hill, Dewayne "Dewey" Tautges and W. Steven Smith.
In addition, Republican voters in District 12 must choose between state Senate candidates Paul Koering and John Hollander to represent the Republican Party in that race.
The Aug. 29-Sept. 12 filing period also applies for candidates for the Cuyuna Range Hospital District. Interested candidates should contact their city or township clerk. Cities that are in the district include Crosby, Cuyuna, Deerwood, Emily, Fifty Lakes, Ironton, Riverton and Trommald. Townships that are in the hospital district are Bay Lake, Deerwood, Fairfield, Irondale, Little Pine, Perry Lake, Rabbit Lake and Wolford.
