LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A freak injury forced Rocco Mediate to withdraw from the PGA Championship on Friday, virtually ending his chances of making the Presidents Cup team.
Mediate, the winner of last week's Buick Open, was injured before his first round Thursday morning when a chair he was sitting in outside the clubhouse at Valhalla Golf Club collapsed.
DALY MELTDOWN: Continuing a trend in recent major tournaments, John Daly threw up some big numbers and hit the road.
Daly, the 1991 PGA champion, kept ahead of the field on Thursday when his 74 was a few tenths of a stroke better than average. And he held it together through the front nine Friday, playing even par.
But the wheels started rattling on the back with a double bogey on 13 and triple bogeys on 17 and 18 to finish with a 10-over 82.
GUTSY MOVE: Give Hal Sutton extra points for the effort.
The 1983 PGA champion completed his second round despite a painful right hip that made it difficult to walk and swing.
