STAPLES -- Gordon O. Berg, age 86, of Staples, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the Staples Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Peter Kirchner officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. Relatives will receive friends on Monday evening from 4-8 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples. The Knights of Columbus will say the rosary at 7:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers.
Gordon Orville Berg was born on Nov. 5, 1916, in Buffalo, Minn., to Arthur V. and Laura O. (Haugen) Berg. As a child he moved with his family to a farm just east of Staples where he grew up and attended school. On Oct. 2, 1945, he married Kathryn Tils in Staples. Together purchased and operated Kathryn's family farm in Thomastown Township where they raised their family. Over the years Gordon has been involved with many groups and boards serving at both the township and county level. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the local Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 of the United States at least once and collecting toy tractors.
He is survived by his four children, Ardelle Stewart of Forest Lake, Bruce (Mary) Berg of Staples, Janice (Allan) Ambrose of Ogilvie, and Kenneth (Patti) Berg of Staples; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marlys Tyrrell of Browerville, and Lois Zappe of Alexandria. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathryn, a brother, Ahldor, and a son-in-law, Bob Stewart.
