Billy F. Gabbert, 76, a Brainerd area resident for the past 40 years, entered into God's kingdom on Aug. 15, 2004, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
He was born on Dec. 29, 1927, in Vibbard, Mo.
A gentle, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Billy is survived by his three children: his son, Billy R. Gabbert and wife, Debra Jean, of St. Louis Park, grandchildren, Jessica Lee, husband Mike, of Bloomington, Minn., Billy T. Gabbert, fiancee Megan Highum, of Richfield, Minn., step-grandchildren, Lindsay and Emily Torgersen, of St. Louis Park; his daughter, Cora Gay Hakanson, husband Robert, of Crosslake, Minn., grandchild, Christina Thell, husband David, great-grandchild, Elijah, of Breezy Point; and his daughter, Laurie A. Lusti, husband Joseph, grandchild, Walter, of Baxter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents, Henry and Cora (Smart) Gabbert; one sister; and two brothers.
Billy served in the United States Navy for 29 years. He served in WWII, the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy, Billy worked at Bremer Bank for 15 years. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brainerd for 40 years and a member of the American Legion.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Andy Smith officiating. Billy will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley, Minn., following the memorial service. Military graveside rites will be provided by the American Legion Post No. 255.
