-- Forestview Middle School will open in January in Baxter. All students in sixth-ninth grades at Washington Middle School and Mississippi Horizons will empty their lockers and desks and move to Forestview Middle School before winter break on Dec. 20, returning to the new middle school in the new year.
-- Fall sports will remain at the regular fields and locations until second semester when the middle school wrestling and basketball programs will move to Forestview. All middle school spring sports, such as baseball, softball and tennis, will be at Forestview starting in 2005.
-- Franklin Junior High School staff and its eighth- and ninth-grade students will spend their last year in the 73-year-old school before it is closed at the end of the school year.
-- Washington Middle School will undergo minor changes and will become the new district administrative center in March. Brainerd Community Education offices will be moved there as well. Starting the summer of 2005, the Fun 'N' Friends after school childcare program now based at Lincoln Elementary will be at Washington.
-- Brainerd High School is undergoing significant renovations that will be completed the summer of 2005. New classroom space, a new front entrance and administrative area should be completed in November. Other major renovations include the replacement of floor tiles, walls and windows.
-- A new security system at BHS will restrict access to the building. Closed circuit camera surveillance and card reader technology will be installed at four of the school's five entrances by this fall. The fifth entrance will have an access card reader by the fall of 2005. Only staff members will have cards to open the doors.
-- BHS will be a closed campus starting this fall. High school students will be forced to remain on campus during lunch. The lunch offerings have been expanded to five lunch lines that will offer sandwiches, burgers, Italian cuisine, a la carte and regular hot lunch. The kitchen food service area has been remodeled to accommodate the lunch service growth.
-- Riverside and Baxter elementary schools will have had major heating, ventilating and cooling system renovation work completed in 2004.
Brainerd School District changes during the 2005-2006 school year:
-- Mississippi Horizons will open during the 2005-2006 school year as Brainerd High School South Campus, housing all the district's ninth-grade students. The sixth-grade wing will now be occupied by the high school world languages courses, including Spanish, German and French, and listening labs. The district's administrative offices that currently occupy 10,000 square feet of space will be reverted back to classrooms. The high school automotive program and Apple Cafe will remain at the south campus.
-- "The Pit" parking area has had about 75 percent of the bituminous removed so far and will become soccer practice fields.
-- The district's $5 million technology project, a portion of the district's $59.9 million levy referendum used to connect the schools with fiber optics and upgrade computer technology and servers, will be finished in the fall of 2005.
