A 39-year-old Brainerd man remained in critical condition Saturday morning at the St. Cloud Hospital and the 25-year-old Brainerd man accused of punching him during an argument was arraigned Friday on criminal charges.
Bradley Thomas Lewis, 25, appeared in Crow Wing County District Court on charges of first-degree assault resulting in great bodily harm and third-degree assault resulting in substantial bodily harm. His next court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 2.
According to the criminal complaint, at around 1:25 a.m. Thursday, Brainerd Police responded to an assault near 7th and Front streets in the downtown. Officers learned that Chad Charles Campbell, 39, and an older man were involved in a verbal altercation at that location. The complaint states that as bystanders were attempting to separate Campbell and the older man, a third person, later identified as Lewis, appeared. At some point, Lewis took his shirt off and was trying to get at Campbell, who was calling Lewis names. The complaint states that Lewis was yelling at Campbell, saying that he was going to hurt him and that he was "going to mess him up."
Brainerds Bradley Lewis is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 2.
A witness told police that Campbell asked Lewis why he was trying to hit him and said Lewis had nothing to do with the situation. Witnesses also indicated that it appeared that Campbell did not want to fight and that he had his hands up in a defensive manner when Lewis ran around a group of people and struck Campbell on the side of the head, knocking him to the ground and rendering him unconscious.
The complaint also states that, at that point, Lewis left the scene. Campbell was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and then transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital. The complaint stated that Campbell was in critical condition in the intensive care unit and was on a ventilator and suffered extensive frontal/temporal lobe brain damage.
