Three Brainerd junior tennis teams advanced from area championships and competed in the USTA Junior Team Tennis Northern Sectional Tournament July 28-31 at the Baseline Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
Each game a player won in individual matches counted as a point for the team score. Team winners were determined by total games won, not matches won.
In the 14-under intermediate division, the Brainerd Slices won their pool by winning 108 games.
Brainerd beat Moore Lake 31 games to 26, Eastview Red 38-16 and White Bear Lake 39-24.
The Slices advanced to the second day, which shifted to bracket play and received a bye in the first round because they won the second-highest number of games in pool play.
Brainerd was defeated in the quarterfinals by Virginia Blue 37-24.
Members of the Slices were Mikinzee Salo, Mackayla Headlee, Briana Rademacher, Kayla Kraemer, Nichole Gervenak, Ryan Goos, Ben Anderholm, Bobby Posch and Gunnar Askegaard. Coach was Lisa Salo.
The 18-under advanced division was a 10-team round-robin tournament. The Brainerd Aces I placed eighth with a total of 153 games won and received the team spirit award.
The Aces beat Anoka-Ramsey 30-13; lost to Lifetime Fitness of Oakdale 23-17; lost to Moore Lake 22-21; tied Minnetonka 24-24; lost to Moore Lake I 30-3; beat the Hibbing Bluejackets 24-23; lost to McClain Tennis Academy 21-18; lost to Sioux Falls 30-5 and lost to Fred Wells Tennis Center 27-9.
Team members were Morgan Salo, Nate Henningson, Devin Larson, Corey Kuglin, Abby Edin, Emma Koskiniemi, Andrea Koskiniemi. Coach was Lisa Salo.
In the 18-under intermediate division the Brainerd Smashes won 100 games and the team spirit award.
In pool play the Smashes beat Pine City 37-17, lost to Apple Valley Gold 34-24 and beat Mankato 39-21.
The second day shifted to bracket play. The Smashes received a bye in the round of 16.
They defeated Mankato II in the quarterfinals 30-14. In the semifinals they lost to Set Point of St. Cloud 23-16.
In the third-place match they tied Apple Valley Gold 23-23 before Apple Valley won via a tiebreaker to take third place.
Members of the Smashes were Mikinzee Salo, Zoe Houle, Taylor Headlee, Samantha Kletscher, Garth Askegaard, Jordan Shiltz, Cole Sundquist and Chris Rud. Coaches were Lisa Salo, Bill Salo and Bruce Boland.
