Fishing report
Outdoor news
LAKE MILLE LACS
East - Minnows or crawlers on spinner rigs are producing walleyes on or near the deep gravel areas during the day. At night, slip bobbers and leeches continue to work best in 28 feet - unless the wind is blowing. If that's the case, slide on top of the shallow rock reefs. Better numbers of good-sized perch are being caught between walleyes and there was more muskie activity noted this week. Smallmouth bass also remain active on the rocks.
West - The tops and edges of the mud flats are producing walleyes during the day. Spinners and rainbows are working best with crawlers and spinners the best secondary option. At night, anchor and pitch slip bobbers and leeches off the flats in 28 to 32 feet. There's been a noticeable improvement for muskie and northern pike activity in the bays this week. Smallmouths have bit well on rock points and humps.
LAKE OF THE WOODS
Live bait and downrigging have both produced walleyes now that the water has started to warm. The reefs around Garden Island and Little Oak Island have been hot on the north end. The south shore from Long Point to Zippel Bay and over to Morris Point also has produced a lot of fish. At the Northwest Angle, walleyes are really hitting around Oak and Flag islands. Muskie action also has been improving each day at the Angle.
LEECH LAKE AREA
The recent heat has improved muskie action. Small baits are working best on the rocks with some activity in the weeds. The main-lake structure in Walker Bay has been best for walleyes in 14 to 20 feet. A jig and minnow or spinner and crawler has produced the most fish. Trolling crankbaits during the evening hours around the points also has turned walleyes. There are a few more panfish reports coming off Shingobee Bay in 14 to 16 feet. Trader's Bay remains the best perch option and the rice beds are producing bass.
RAINY LAKE
Walleyes remain active on the reefs in 34 to 36 feet from Dryweed towards Saginaw Bay. The Fox Island area also has produced walleyes in 34 to 40 feet and in all areas, a jig and minnow or leech and Lindy Rig is working best. The crappie bite in Black Bay remains strong in 10 to 12 feet and pike action has been slow.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
Walleyes have bit best early and late in the day. Work Moxes Hole in 17 feet, the Snaghole in 20 to 25 feet, the west side of Little Stony Point in 11 to 13 feet, and Raven's Point in 10 to 12 feet. Generally speaking, work shallow if the wind is blowing and deeper when it's calm. Perch have been mixed with the walleyes and a few more northern pike have been caught near the bird houses and west shoreline.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Redtails are producing walleyes in the eight- to 18-foot weeds of Gull Lake. Redtails also have turned walleyes on North Long Lake in 16 to 24 feet. Sunfish have bit well along the weedlines of Lake Hubert, Nisswa Lake, Roy Lake, and Round Lake. Look to North Long and Gull for pike in 20 feet and bass remain active shallow and deep on all lakes.
CASS LAKE AREA
During the day a jig and minnow or Lindy Rig and leech is producing walleyes off the bars in 20 to 40 feet on Pike Bay Lake and Cass Lake. Crankbaits trolled on top of the bars remains the best option after dark. Muskies continue to be difficult to find with a few follows reported off the weedlines. Most anglers are expecting muskie action to improve now that the air and water have warmed. Panfish action also remains slow, although you will find perch scattered on top of the bars.
CROSBY AREA
Sunfish are being caught on the 10- to 15-foot weedlines of Rabbit Lake and Serpent Lake. There's an evening walleye bite with crawlers or crankbaits on Rabbit in 20 to 25 feet. Rainbow trout continue to be caught on crawlers or Power Bait on the Manuel Pit and Pennington Pit. Look for some good-sized pike off Pennington as well. Bass are hitting buzzbaits and spinnerbaits on the weedlines of most lakes during low-light periods.
CROSS LAKE AREA
Walleyes have bit best in the mornings on minnows and leeches at the Whitefish Chain in 16 to 22 feet. Northern pike are hitting spinnerbaits and spoons tight to the weedlines. Bass are hitting plastics on the weedlines or docks and sunfish can be had in 12 feet. Crappies remain suspended over 14 to 16 feet with minnows and small jigs working best.
CUSHING AREA
A few walleyes continue to be caught at night in 20 to 30 feet on Fish Trap Lake, Lake Shamineau, and Lake Alexander. CowGirls have been the ticket for muskies during low-light periods on Shamineau and Alexander. Sucker minnows have triggered northern pike on the shallow weedlines of Alexander.
EMILY AREA
Walleyes continue to eat crawlers on Mitchell Lake in 16 to 18 feet. Work sucker minnows on the 10- to 12-foot weedlines of Eagle Lake for northern pike. On West Fox Lake, Twister Tails and minnows are turning crappies in 12 to 14 feet. The slop on Lake Emily is holding good-sized bass and Island Lake is a safe bet for sunfish.
HACKENSACK AREA
Walleyes have bit better this week with leeches and crawlers turning fish during the day in 17 to 25 feet of water and in eight to 16 feet during the evenings. Lakes such as Woman, Ten Mile, and Birch have been best. Pleasant Lake and Birch are producing sunfish in 12 to 14 feet of water and crappies are being pulled from six to 12 feet at Webb Lake and Birch. Lake Wabedo is giving up muskies, while bass and pike action is strong on the weedlines of most lakes.
RED LAKE
The walleye bite has slowed, but limits are not impossible. The best reports are coming from the Tamarack River and "Popples" area in three to six feet on leeches and fathead minnows. Northern pike continue to bite throughout the lake, but there hasn't been a lot of big fish caught over the past week to 10 days.
