At the intersection of South Sixth and Washington streets, the Lion-shaped drinking fountain in front of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber office was tipped over by the storm but was righted about 8:30 p.m. Several temporary business and street signs were tipped over or destroyed by the powerful winds. The signs I'm referring to are the ones that are put up at crosswalks for pedestrians. Just because the sign is there doesn't mean the car will stop for you. The car will only stop if he sees you or is paying attention. If not, it may be too late for you. Remove the signs and make people responsible for their own safety instead of trusting the signs and cross only when the cars have posted.

I'll have to agree with the gentleman from Pequot Lakes (Franken's jokes won't improve, July 30) on the quality of Franken's jokes. But the last laugh will be on Sen. Coleman when he opposes a serious Democrat like Mike Ciresi in 2008.
