20 years ago (1980)

The Brainerd School Board can tell people that there's a special levy election Tuesday, but can't tell them how they should vote.

30 years ago (1970)

At least 10 bands will play at the hospital benefit music festival at the Brainerd Armory Saturday night. The festival will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until at least 1 a.m. A jam session may continue beyond that time.

40 years ago (1960)

A bond issue to finance needed fire department improvements here may be placed on the Sept. 13 primary ballot.

60 years ago (1940)

Brainerd Daily Dispatch headlines:

-- Four hundred delegates expected here for three-day meet

80 years ago (1920)

The State Convention of rural letter carriers has been secured for Brainerd in August 1921, due to the efforts of George B. Falconer. The Convention will bring to Brainerd from 150 to 200 delegates.

100 years ago (1900)

"Two?" demanded the conductor as he took a quarter from the woman.

"No, four," she replied.

Four fares were rung sharply and the conducted handed back 5 cents.

"That isn't right!" exclaimed the woman.

"You said you wanted to pay for four."

"I didn't," denied the woman. "You asked if my little boy was 2 years old, and I said 'No, he was 4.'"
