JERUSALEM -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has permitted his foreign minister, Shimon Peres, to resume truce talks with senior Palestinians, despite two suicide bombings by Islamic militants over four days, officials said Monday.
Sharon instructed Peres not to conduct peace negotiations, and the foreign minister will need special approval to meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
In the West Bank town of Hebron, a 7-year-old Palestinian girl was killed by Israeli army fire in an overnight exchange with Palestinian gunmen, doctors said.
On Sunday evening, a suicide bombing evening injured 20 people sitting on the patio of a cafe in a suburb of the northern Israeli port city of Haifa. The assailant, a 28-year-old member of the militant group Islamic Jihad, was killed.
The attack came only four days after a member of the militant Hamas group blew himself up in a packed pizzeria in downtown Jerusalem.
