20 years ago (1989)

Milk and cookies at the door and a hug from Mom after school are rarities in 1989. Many parents work outside the home but the Brainerd School District has a solution. The district will operate Fun and Friends every school day from 3 - 6 p.m.

30 years ago (1979)

40 years ago (1969)

The Brainerd School Board turned down requests to provide bus transportation for private parochial school students pending a test court case now being filed.

60 years ago (1949)

For the first time in the history of Crow Wing County there will be a five-day fair. "It promises to be the largest fair ever held in the county," predicts B.C. Wilkins, fair board secretary.

80 years ago (1929)

The wife of Commander Richard E. Byrd, famed explorer, sent a telegram to Mr. and Mrs. T.T. Blackburn, offering to take a letter on a supply ship headed to Antarctica. Quin Blackburn, their son, is a geologist with the Byrd expedition.

100 years ago (1909)

Wm. Thompson, of this city, who runs the passenger trains between Staples and Duluth has a reputation as one of the "fiercest" men on the line at making up time. He pulled the throttle at Deerwood this morning 15 minutes late, but arrived in Brainerd on time.
