Richard L. Knowlen

Richard Lee Knowlen, Brainerd, 86, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 21, 1922, in Crow Wing County to Clifton and Evetta (Hill) Knowlen. He was a United States Army veteran who served in France during World War II. He worked in the blacksmith shop for the railroad. He was a life member of the VFW in Garrison and a member of the American Legion in Deerwood.

He is survived by his wife, Lucy, Brainerd; his children, Rick, Deerwood, Glen (Connie), Brainerd, Al (Julie), Aitkin; and Virginia Harris, Deerwood; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters, Violet South, Bloomington, Ione Christensen, Deerwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tamara; brothers, Jerrold, Murel, Euden and Eugene.

Services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Garrison with Pastor Matthew Ruech officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Military rites will be provided by VFW Post No. 1816 of Garrison.
