Drag racing feeling pinch

Posted: Tuesday, August 11, 2009

Even drag racing is feeling the effects of this recession.

The 28th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals starts Thursday at Brainerd International Raceway. As of Monday afternoon, five area hotels still had openings for the event.

"It appears we are not immune," BIR owner Jed Copham said of the recession's impact on attendance for the annual event. "We're definitely going to feel it."

Copham said motorsports, including NASCAR, along with other sporting events have felt the effect of fans who are faced with spending concerns. If people are having difficulty making mortgage payments or buying groceries, Copham said it's understandable they'll cut something else. And that may include entertainment, even a traditional summer camping outing punctuated by the roar of speedsters.

Beyond the drag racing and pit activities along with interactive displays and simulated competition, the event features live music in its band shell, fireworks, concessions and on-site camping. For others, a day at the races may be a much-needed distraction from stress at home.

"It's an extremely fun place to be," Copham said, noting more bands have been added this year to entertain the crowd when the races are not the main attraction. Last year, Copham said more than 100,000 people attended the NHRA Nationals.

At BIR, Copham said advance ticket sales have been down about 10 percent. Copham said he hopes the ticket sales at the gate during the event will do better.

"It would definitely be nice to see some summer weather and full bleachers," Copham said. "If we are only 10 percent down, I'd consider this a success."
