Firefighters respond
The Brainerd Fire Department responded to a call at 12:48 p.m. Sunday at 16144 McKay Rd.

POLICE BLOTTER
ARRESTS - Arrested a 19-year-old man for second-degree assault and terroristic threats at 1145 p.m. Sunday at Wal-Mart Supercenter, 7295 Glory Road, after it was reported a man allegedly brandished a weapon in the parking lot. Brainerd Police officers and Crow Wing County Sheriff's deputies assisted.

Boy on bike critically hurt in crash
A 4-year-old Brainerd boy was in critical condition after he rode his bicycle into the path of an oncoming sport-utility vehicle Tuesday afternoon on Russell Road off Riverside Drive in northwest Brainerd.

District eyes cash-flow shortage

A procession for Fred
A procession of emergency vehicles escorted retired Brainerd firefighter Fred Eiesland's body, with his motorcycle in the trailer behind, onto Business Highway 371 on Sunday night. The longtime firefighter died near his boyhood home in LeMars, Iowa, Saturday night. Eiesland's funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Assembly of God Church in Baxter. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Staples. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Frances E. Feierabend
Frances E. Feierabend, age 88, resident of Baxter, died Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at St. Joseph's Medical Center. Frances was born in Mission Township, Minn., on Jan. 2, 1921, to Francis "Frank" and Jenny (Mills) Foote. She married Lester Feierabend in Brainerd on July 23, 1938. Frances was a restaurant owner and cook for many years in Brainerd.

William R. Thomas
CROSBY - William Russell Thomas, 91, Crosby, died Aug. 5, 2009, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village, Brainerd. He was born to James and Selma (Seedland) Thomas in Ironton on Dec. 7, 1917. William served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

Richard Lee Knowlen, Brainerd, 86, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at his home.

Michael V. Tibbetts
BANDERA, Texas - Mike Tibbetts, of Bandera, Texas, formerly of Aitkin, Minn., died Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, in Zimmerman, Minn., at the home of longtime friend, Kathy Kokesh. He was born May 31, 1939, in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Mike was the owner and operator of Mike's Excavating. Mike's Excavating was instrumental in building Crosby High School, Aitkin High School, 40 Club Motley and Banquet Hall and several other projects in Aitkin County.

Sotomayor's potential impact
WASHINGTON - When Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina was explaining his decision to become one of the nine Republicans to support the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, he said it was made easier because she would not alter the ideological balance on the Supreme Court. Having her replace Justice David Souter, a regular member of the liberal bloc, would not tilt the court further in that direction, he said.

As our employees, we should determine their salary and when, and if, they deserve a raise. Why do they set their own salary with automatic raises, pensions and allowances?
