Fishing

By Outdoor News

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Sunfish, pike, and bass can be found near weeds in most area lakes. Live bait or crankbaits have triggered most fish during low-light periods. The weedlines of Gull Lake, Lake Hubert and Nisswa Lake are providing evening crappie action. Work the deep weedlines and bars of Gull for walleyes. Lindy Rigs and crawlers or redtails are working best in 16 to 20 feet.

BEMIDJI AREA

Lake Bemidji and Lake Plantagenet are producing walleyes. The ticket on these lakes has been to work crawlers in 16 feet during low-light periods or redtails in 30 feet during the day. Muskie action has been limited this week, but youll find bluegills in 10 feet and crappies in 14 feet at Big Lake and Evergreen Lake. The weedlines of Lake Irvine are holding northern pike, while plastics continue to trigger bass at Big Lake, North Twin and South Twin lakes.

BLACKDUCK AREA

Blackduck Lake is producing walleyes in seven to 10 feet of water on jigs and live bait or crankbaits. Round Lake and Island Lake also have provided steady walleye action in 10 feet of water during the evening hours. Panfish remain active on Pimushe Lake, while spoons are triggering numbers of pike at Gilstead Lake and Rabideau Lake.

CASS LAKE AREA

Walleyes are hitting leeches and crawlers in 35 to 45 feet on Cass Lake. North Cedar Bar and Deadmans Bar have been best. The mid-depth bars of Pike Bay Lake also have given up walleyes. A perch-walleye mix can be had around Cedar Bar and Star Island on Cass with jigs and minnows in eight to 12 feet. Muskie action is best during low-light periods with bucktails and topwater baits. Look for panfish along the strip in Dicks Bay on Cass and bass remain an easy catch on topwater baits.

CROSBY AREA

Walleyes can be caught with consistency on the Mississippi River and Serpent Lake after dark Panfish anglers are catching fish at Little Rabbit Lake and the Mississippi between Riverton and Brainerd. Bass fishing remains strong on most lakes with plastics and plenty of pike can be had with sucker minnows or jerkbaits. Trout fishing in the pits is slow, but muskie action has picked up at Cedar Lake.

HACKENSACK AREA

Natural-colored plastics are producing a lot of bass at Stony Lake. Deep-diving crankbaits are the ticket for good-sized pike in 25 to 30 feet at Ten Mile Lake. Look for crappies on top of the weeds over 14 to 16 feet of water at Birch Lake and Pleasant Lake.

LAKE MILLE LACS

EAST - Crankbaits continue to trigger the most walleyes over 30 feet of water. Muskie anglers are trolling the north-end sand breaks and casting the weeds in Isle Bay and having success, especially during low-light periods. Smallmouth bass remain an easy catch with live bait or plastics on the shallow and mid-depth rocks.

WEST - The daytime walleye bite is limited, but evening action has picked up on the tops and edges of the mud flats. Sucker minnows or crankbaits are producing quite a few good-sized pike on the weedlines of St. Albans Bay. Work the rock points for smallmouth and the best muskie activity continues to take place on the rock points and in weedy bays at night.

LAKE OF THE WOODS

Walleyes are being taken on downriggers in 32 to 35 feet or with live bait on the reefs in 12 to 14 feet. Walleyes and sauger are being taken on the Rainy River in 20 to 22 feet on spinners and crawlers. The Clementson Rapids area has been best. At the Northwest Angle, jigging with crawlers has produced walleyes around Oak Island. Several big muskies also were taken this week in this area.

LAKE VERMILION

Lindy Rigs and crawlers drifted along the weedlines and saddles have produced walleyes. Crankbaits also have turned walleyes this week, especially during low-light periods. Muskie anglers are doing well primarily after dark. CowGirls and SiliGirls have worked best off the rock points and weedlines. Senkos are the ticket for bass in any cover that creates shade.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

Ravens Point, Sugar Point, Little Stoney Point and the south end of Highbanks are all holding walleyes. The key is to work the eight- to 12-foot weedbeds with Shad Raps, spinners and crawlers, or slip bobbers and leeches. A jig and minnow is producing perch on the 12- to 16-foot rock flats. Some bigger pike were taken this week on the six- to eight-foot weedlines.

LEECH LAKE AREA

Walleyes continue to be caught, but theyre spread out in 12 to 14 feet. Shad Raps are a good way to go off Sand Point and Otter Tail Point on Leech Lake. Muskie action has picked up with CowGirls on the main lake rocks and weeds. Look to Boy Bay on Leech and Portage Lake for largemouth bass.

RAINY LAKE

A jig and minnow or crawlers are triggering walleyes in Sand Bay over 35 feet, Eight Mile Island in 30 feet, Community Reef in 30 to 32 feet, and near Blueberry and Steamboat islands in 40 to 50 feet. Sucker minnows are producing pike on the weedlines of Lost Bay and the North Arm continues to provide steady smallmouth bass action.

RED LAKE

Walleye action has slowed with just a few fish being taken on jigs on or near six- to 12 -foot rock piles. The north-end cribs are producing some crappies in 12 feet and the east shore is the best bet for pike in eight feet with spoons or crankbaits.
