Used book sale at Brainerd Public Library

Friends of the Brainerd Public Library will host their summer used book sale from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18. All proceeds will benefit the Brainerd Public Library. For more information, call the library at 829-5574.

Medicare class planned Wednesday, Thursday

A two-hour class, "New to Medicare" will be offered 9-11 a.m. Wednesday or 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union in Brainerd. Instructor is Kathie Phillips, Senior Advocate/Senior LinkAge Line with the Central Minnesota Council on Aging.

There is no fee for the class. Call 829-0371 to register.

Rental property owners meeting planned

The next meeting of the Brainerd Rental Property Owners and Managers will be 7 p.m. Monday at the Brainerd Police Department, 225 East River Road.

The police department is often called to resolve tenant/landlord disputes. Generally, the disputes are civil in nature and police may not be able to intervene. Often disputes end up in court. Karl Samp, a trained mediator, will explain the mediation process and how it may be helpful to landlords and their rental business.

Louise Seliski, executive director of the Women's Center of Mid-Minnesota, also will be available to answer questions about the right of victims of domestic abuse to terminate a lease. This law went into effect on July 1. Copies of the law will be available at the meeting.

Rep. Ward to serve on group

Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, will serve on the Health and Human Services Disabilities Working Group that advises the Health and Human Services Policy Committee.

Recommendations made to the House committee will be considered as part of health care legislation to be introduced in the 2008 legislative session.

Ward has more than 20 years experience as a special education teacher. He started and was head coach of the Brainerd adapted floor hockey team. Under his direction his team won one state title and placed second or third several times.

The working group will meet Friday to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Crosslake Garden Club to meet Wednesday

CROSSLAKE - The Crosslake Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Crosslake Community Center.

The guest will be Shelley Boser from Landsburg Nursery, speaking about "Putting Plants to Sleep."

Little Falls City Council to meet Monday

The Little Falls City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the council chambers at City Hall in Little Falls.
