Heavy reign

Track staff handles conditions; Ebert among feature winners

Posted: Monday, August 10, 2009

Mother Nature and the elements were all around North Central Speedway Saturday. Thanks to the track staff, all five classes ran a full schedule.

In the Midwest Modified, Dan Ebert distanced himself further from Shane Sabraski with a victory in the feature event.

Todd Wooden got his first career feature win in the Street Stock class.

Don Eischens took the checkered flag in the Super Stock and he was set to have another great finish in the A-Modified feature before being knocked out by car trouble. Joey Jensen grabbed the top spot and hung on take the feature victory.

In the Pure Stock class, Mike Smude wrestled away first place from Bill Nelson on lap 17 and recorded his seventh victory this season and distanced himself from the pack in the season points chase.

The rain through the week slowed the track for the heat events, but by the time feature events came around the track was in great shape said both Wooden and Ebert, who credited track officials for the conditions.

"You know it's pretty tough to battle with Mother Nature," said Ebert. "She always wins and I give kudos to North Central and Cliff and everyone who was on the track prep.

"Tim Boeder and the boys pulled it off. There was weather pretty much all around us and we got racing in tonight. I thought the racing service was pretty good given the conditions."

For Wooden, the Street Stock win was special for a couple of reasons. Late last season, he took over the ride from his dad, Wayne, who was a fixture at the track since the 1060s.

"There is no way I could do anything without my dad," said the younger Wooden. "He gets so much credit. He's got the shop and all the years experience and tonight it came together. That's the best... he can be proud of me. That's the best reward there is.

"It took 11 years to do this. Everything went well today."

The track conditions were to Wooden's liking.

After taking second behind Tim Johnson in his heat race, Wooden gained a front-row start in the feature. He held the lead for the entire race and held off the challenge of Johnson for the last five laps.

"The car was handling phenomenal and the track was the tackiest it's been all year," said Wooden. "That's what my car is set for. I got the luck of the draw and got the front row. When you are running in the front row, you're hoping that the guys with the really big motors don't have time to catch you."

Earlier this season, Ebert had a win by less then a second, and he got his second photo win of the year Saturday.

Starting from row four, Ebert worked his way through traffic to run in second for the majority of the race. He trailed Jamie Thorstad when the white flag came out and that was when Ebert took one more shot at the win.

"We had the Haford, Dondelinger car hooked up tonight and were going fast," said Ebert. "We kind of caught the breaks early in the race and got through traffic. I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to get him (Thorstad) because he was protecting the lead and running a good race.

With the white flag, I thought I would give it one more try. On turn three I went up high and then shot down on three and four and I knew it would be close."

Ebert was able to just get past Thorstad on the front straightaway and gained the victory by just 2/10ths of a second.
