CROSSLAKE -- A World War II paratrooper who advised Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg is expected as a featured speaker this September in Crosslake to draw attention to the city's library project.
Herb Suerth, one of the remaining veterans of paratroopers featured in HBO's "Band of Brothers," executive produced by the two Hollywood luminaries, has been contacted for a presentation in Crosslake. A Sept. 15 date for the presentation at the city's community center is being confirmed with Suerth.
"I think it will be standing room only," said Paula Karl, library committee member. "That has been the report when he goes and speaks, it is standing room only. It's going to be a hard ticket to find. It's going to be exciting."
At Monday's Crosslake council meeting, Alden Hardwick, library committee member, said the fund-raising total had reached $224,000. The plan is to construct a library addition to the community center. The committee's goal is a $300,000 estimate to cover the cost of the building, furnishings and startup.
Hardwick said Suerth has been a compelling speaker, particularly popular with high school students. The presentation is expected to include information about the library project.
A book sale is set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Lion's picnic pavilion. During the last two hours of the sale, a bag of books is $1.
