Conner is a bright-eyed, 10-year-old boy who has a smile that lights up the room.
He has been to many of our group activities since enrolling in Kinship Partners last year. Because of his happy nature and eagerness to learn new things, we are always glad to see his name on the sign-up list.
But we don't like seeing his name on the waiting list! Conner is too special to have to wait much longer for a Kinship Partner. It seems that the biggest obstacle to finding him a mentor is logistics. He lives near Fort Ripley, and most of our volunteers have wanted a partner closer to Brainerd. It would be great if someone from the Fort Ripley area would come forward to help. However, Conner attends school in Brainerd, and somebody from town with time available during after school hours could be a wonderful match for him.
Conner is on the quiet side, but is very friendly. He is the youngest of four siblings and sees his father only once or twice a year. Individual attention given by an adult friend could make a big difference in his life, helping him to see that he is important in this world.
Some people think that special skills are needed to be a Kinship Partner ... and they are right! You need to have a good ear for listening, be genuinely happy to see the child, be able to encourage the child, and be able to see or contact the child on a regular basis.
If you are looking for a volunteer activity, being a Kinship Partner could be right for you. As a youth mentor you will find yourself involved in fun and rewarding work. Conner enjoys bike riding, swimming, fishing, crafts, playing cards, and watching movies.
He really wants to try roller blading and skating. If these activities sound like fun to you, please give Kinship Partners a call, and give Conner what he really needs -- the gift of your time.
