ST. PAUL (AP) -- There was a glimmer of hope in an otherwise grim employment field as the number of Minnesotans filing new unemployment claims dropped slightly in July from a year earlier.
Jobless claims were down 2.2 percent from the same month a year ago, but they still remained at a historically very high level.
Last month, 23,037 people applied for unemployment benefits in Minnesota compared with 23,567 new applicants a year earlier.
In July 2000, initial claims totaled 13,176.
