The Minnesota Technology Inc. Board of Directors appointed Frank Starke interim president to lead the organization during its transition from a quasi-state corporation to a private non-profit corporation.
Starke is president emeritus of Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis. He served as Dunwoody's president from 1994 until July 2002.
Before that, Starke served the Alexandria community for 25 years at the Alexandria Technical College, with the last 10 years as its president.
Minnesota Technology board members reported seeing Starke's successful transition from a publicly-funded technical college to a private non-profit technical college as valuable experience consistent with the transition MTI is now experiencing.
MTI is a leading provider of technology information and strategic consulting services for manufacturers and technology businesses throughout the state and region.
The corporation is a tremendous catalyst for economic change, as it unites and sustains Minnesota's technology sector through research, instruction and hands-on consulting.
During the 2003 Minnesota legislative session, Gov. Tim Pawlenty had proposed eliminating all state funding from MTI.
Minnesota Technology reported many of its clients voiced strong concern about the loss of such an organization to Minnesota's economy.
Legislators provided $3 million for the 2004-05 biennium. Part of the funding package includes Minnesota Technology evolving into a private entity.
Minnesota Technology is also affiliated with the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Manufacturing Extension Partnership network, a program within NIST linking together all 50 states and Puerto Rico to strengthen the global competitiveness of U.S.-based manufacturing. Centers within the network provide information, decision support and implementation assistance to smaller manufacturing firms in adopting new, more advance manufacturing technologies, techniques, and business best practices.
MTI has offices located throughout the state.
