ARDEN HILLS (AP) -- The message stayed the same whether Sen. Paul Wellstone was talking to angry Qwest workers or to a group called Business Democrats: Rogue executives are ruining the economy.
"Am I the candidate of corporate America? I guess not," the grinning Minnesota Democrat told a crowd of about 35 business folks on Thursday. "Will that hurt me? I guess not."
Wellstone's re-election campaign is trying to harness public outrage in a year of massive accounting scandals, record bankruptcies, indicted executives and withered retirement funds.
The theme is the thickest chapter in Democrat's playbook nationwide this election season; gubernatorial candidate Roger Moe has been tailoring a similar message to state-regulated utilities including Xcel Energy and Qwest.
Wellstone, though, hits the theme notably hard and often.
Even business advocates concede the high-profile problems are good politics.
