A Baxter resident was awarded the promising new professional award for learning disabilities given by the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning in conjunction with St. Cloud State University.
Marilyn Hukriede, Baxter, was selected by the university on the basis of her achievements and skills in teaching students with specific learning disabilities.
Kiffmeyer to speak at Camp Ripley
CAMP RIPLEY -- Minnesota Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer will speak at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the first Camp Ripley Armed Forces Retiree Activity Day.
Her address, which will be on initiatives to ease the absentee voting process for active Minnesota military personnel and her "Vote in Honor of a Veteran" program for high school seniors, will be at the camp's training and community center.
Farmers may qualify for unemployment
Farmers who are totally or partially unable to work on the farm for one or more weeks because of a disaster may be eligible for disaster unemployment insurance, said state Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie.
Assistance may be available even to individuals who normally would not qualify for unemployment insurance. The assistance is made available through a cooperative effort between the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Minnesota Department of Economic Security.
"I encourage Todd, Douglas, Morrison, Otter Tail, Stearns and Wadena County farmers to contact their nearest Minnesota WorkForce Center or call (888) 438-5627 to determine their eligibility or to apply," said Otremba.
Applications for Disaster Unemployment Assistance must be filed within 30 days of the official announcement date of the disaster.

Baxter man to receive WWII medal
Gilbert R. Grossman of Baxter will be presented with the Normandy of Jubilee of Liberty Medal during an Aug. 27 ceremony at VFW Post 8731 in Monticello.
Rep. Mark Kennedy, R-Minn., will present the medals. The Jubilee of Liberty Medal was authorized by the governor of Normandy to be presented for military service on the beaches of Normandy, France, during World War II. Kennedy will present medals to 20 veterans or their family members at Monticello.
