Denny Hecker's Crosslake vacation homes were purchased at a sheriff's sale for $7.01 million in May. This week The Star Tribune reported TCF National Bank now agreed to pay $70,000 for Hecker's personal property inside his Crosslake mansion. The properties are just more of the fallout after Hecker's auto empire imploded. Bankruptcy and legal battles have been ongoing. Hecker declared bankruptcy in 2009. He tried to list his Crosslake vacation residence as his main home to save it from the foreclosure, but the court disagreed. Now the bank is likely getting a deal on what remains of Hecker's former life in his Crosslake complex.

The Star Tribune reported the list of Hecker's property in Crosslake included a life-size Elvis Presley statue, a Harley-Davidson jukebox, a Waterford wine opener and numbered Jack Nicklaus golf clubs. Those items were with the expected furniture, TVs, exercise equipment, artwork, pool tables, pinball machines one might expect in a lakeside mansion where money was once not an issue. That was before Hecker's fall from empire status when he still had multiple dealerships, including those in Baxter.

"Hecker's Medina home is also being foreclosed," the Star Tribune reported. "It is unclear where he intends to live next. Hecker, who is under a court-ordered curfew and wears a GPS ankle bracelet, faces 26 federal charges for conspiracy, bankruptcy and mail fraud. Hecker has denied all charges. His trial begins in October."

Arvig Telephone Co. in Perham was one of five rural telephone cooperatives to share in Recovery Act money, the Associated Press reported. More than $40 million in loans and grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is going toward bringing broadbrand services to rural portions of the state.

The money is expected to help bring broadband access to more than 13,300 households, businesses and community facilities in 11 rural Minnesota counties, the AP reported, which include areas of Cass and Crow Wing counties.

The other recipients were: Woodstock Telephone Co., serving Lyon, Pipestone and Rock counties; Farmers Mutual Telephone Co. in Lac qui Parle County; Wikstrom Telephone Co. in Kittson, Marshall and Roseau counties; and Federated Telephone Cooperative in rural Morris. The AP reported the latest announcement means about $60 million of broadband Recovery Act funds have been awarded to Minnesota.

The outlook on an end to the foreclosure stream with a slowly recovering economy isn't being helped by the outlook.

The Crow Wing County recorder's office reported the number of sheriff's certificates files in July compared to the past two years was down slightly. Sheriff's certificates show a foreclosure occured.

The number of sheriff's certificates were 26 this July compared to 31 in July of 2009 and 34 in July of 2008.

But the more serious leap comes from the notices of pendency, which indicate a foreclosure is coming. For July the number was 63, up from 58 last year during July and 40 in July of 2008.

Johnson's Personality and Interiors of Nisswa began a search this summer for a partner to merge their business with. Owners Doug and Ann Johnson said the move came because of the economy and their desire to begin lightening their work load. The business celebrated its 50th year in 2009. Potential partners appeared to be a contractor or architect or interior design firm where they could share experience and an established clientele.

Dave's Custom Framing in Little Falls moved to 54 East Broadway and expanded its showroom. Dave and Linda Burggraff own the business. Ron Ashby is the manager.

The Golden Shovel Agency opened at 43 East Broadway in Little Falls. The business creates and maintains websites for nonprofits that focus on economic development, the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce reported.
