Ag secretary pledges quick work on drought disaster declaration
Six area counties are among the 25 Minnesota counties where Gov. Tim Pawlenty has asked for a federal agriculture disaster designation. The governor said U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns told Pawlenty Monday he has directed his staff to work expeditiously on the issue with a decision possibly coming as quickly as Tuesday.

Ernest J. Gosse
Ernest J. Gosse, 86, Brainerd, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at his home in Brainerd. He was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Brainerd to Charles and Pegny (Pederson) Gosse. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He married Aldene Scheerle in St. Cloud on Nov. 4, 1946. He loved to garden, fish and trap pocket gophers. He was a member of Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brainerd.

OTHER OPINION: Iraq
In a land as ancient and complex as Iraq, change takes time. And compromise does not come easy when it can be interpreted as fatal weakness. So it is undoubtedly true, as President Bush and his advisers are fond of saying, that the political reconciliation clock in Baghdad is running behind the expectations clock in Washington. U.S. officials are now arguing for more time for the "surge" to work.

I've heard conservatives say, "It's my money. I can spend it better than the government" and "Starve the beast." I'm not blaming our governor or Republicans for the tragedy in Minneapolis, but it makes the point that we do get something for our tax dollars. We need to invest in infrastructure. I, for one, am willing to pay more if it means safe and reliable roads.
