PINE RIVER -- The Cass County Board awarded the contract Tuesday for rebuilding and paving County State Aid Highway 2 from Highway 64 to CSAH 25.
Kern and Tabery Inc. of Wadena was low bidder at $1,710,671.84, 12.87 percent under the engineering estimate. The 10 bids received ranged as high as $2,272,331.18 or 15.74 percent over estimate.
Federally licensed firearms dealers may bid to buy seized and forfeited firearms from the Cass County Sheriff's Department. They can view firearms and pick up bid forms from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 and must return completed bid forms by 4 p.m. Aug. 23.
Cass will receive $124,000 from the workers' compensation fund and $29,382 from the property and casualty fund in Minnesota Counties Insurance Trust dividends this year.
Because Leech Lake TV Corp. is expected to raise the county's lease rate significantly to use its tower, the county board capital improvement committee consisting of Commissioners Jim Demgen and Jim Dowson will look at alternative options.
Administrator Robert Yochum reported Tuesday Leech Lake Television has begun formal application process with the city of Walker to replace the tower at an estimated $150,000 cost.
Presently, the county pays $400 per month for its lease. That rate could increase to $1,000 per month on the new tower, Yochum said.
The commissioners authorized Sheriff Randy Fisher to accept a $39,589 federal Safe and Sober grant, with a $4,500 county match.
They authorized Veterans Services Officer Faye Dudley to apply for an operational improvement grant to pay for a computer and related equipment.
Motley American Legion Post 124 has donated $1,000 to the veterans services transportation fund. Citizens attending the county fair this year donated another $22 to that fund by purchasing flag pins.
Jodi J. DeSkeere has been hired as the diversion worker for the probation office. Margaret Heyne will work under contract as a public health nurse to fill in for full-time employees during maternity leaves and as needed in other areas.
